fast weight loss
July 3rd, 2009
Researchers developed an approach that included education about the biological and psychological determinants of body weight, weight loss, and weight regain; cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) methods to enhance self-esteem and body image (independent of weight); and instruction in behavioral methods of weight control. These investigators report changes in weight, body image, and serf-esteem associated with a novel treatment after 40 weeks of treatment and at a 1-year follow-up (that is, week 92). They also compare these results with those obtained in published trials of standard behavior treatment. Subjects were 17 obese women with a mean age of 46.5 [+ or -] 9.7 years, a mean weight of 92.8 [+ or -] 9.1 kg, and a mean BMI of 34.7 [+ or -] 2.9 kg/[m.sup.2]. Thirteen were white (76.5%), and four were African American (23.5%). The program was designed to alter patients expectations and to promote the acceptance of realistic weight loss outcomes (that is, approximately a 10% weight loss). Subjects were treated in groups of 7 to 10 persons and attended 20 weekly sessions, 5 monthly sessions (over 20 weeks), and a 1-year follow-up visit. The 40-week intervention consisted of four phases. During phase 1 (weeks 1 to 4), the subjects were instructed to refrain from making any changes in their eating or activity habits to focus entirely on examining their weight loss goals and expectations. Phase II of the program (weeks 5 to 12) focused on the development of weight control skills. The subjects were instructed to consume a self-selected diet of 1200 to 1500 kcal/day and were trained in the standard cognitive behavioral methods of weight control. Phase III (weeks 13 to 20) focused on methods to improve body image and self esteem. And finally, phase IV of the program (weeks 24 to 40) focused on developing weight maintenance skills. Weight was measured at each treatment visit. Changes in weight, self-esteem, body image, and quality of life were assessed at the end of treatment and 1 year later. At week 40, participants lost an average of 5.7 [+ or -] 5.3% of initial weight, which was associated with significant improvements in body image, self-esteem, and quality of life. Improvements in psychosocial status were maintained at week 92, although mean weight loss at this time had declined to 2.9 [+ or -] 5.6% of initial weight. Increased satisfaction with body weight at week 40 was associated with significantly better maintenance of weight loss at follow-up (r = -70; p = 0.02).
Repeated evidence shows instruction by a registered dietitian (RD) is an effective weight loss strategy for various populations, different disease conditions, and in multiple settings. To determine how weight loss success due to an RD-led intervention compared with frequent weight monitoring, researchers examined a weight loss program that included RD-led weight-loss classes and frequent weigh-in visits. Investigators evaluated weight loss on a continuous scale based on attendance of both RD-led weight-loss classes and weigh-in visits that did not include RD interaction. They examined the relative strength of each of these factors on weight-loss success in a population recruited from the surrounding community for a hypocaloric weight-loss study. Eight of the participants for the hypocaloric weight loss intervention had type 1 diabetes mellitus, a condition that makes successful, safe weight loss especially difficult. The study subjects were overweight (BMI > 27.0) men (n=10) and women (n=16). At baseline the mean BMI was 33.2 to 3.67 and age was 43+12 years. Subjects with type 1 diabetes had mean baseline hemoglobin Ale (HbAlc) of 7.2% [+ or -] 1.0%. The energy prescription was determined as a 750-kcal deficit from estimated total energy expenditure. Subjects then participated in the 11-week weight-loss phase composed of 33 visits, including 11 weekly 1-hour RD-led weight loss classes and 22 semiweekly non-RD-related weigh-in visits. Weight loss (%) was evaluated on a continuous scale based on percent of RD and non-RD visits attended. Subjects with type 1 diabetes were asked to provide blood glucose records weekly and HbAlc was measured on the fist and last study visits. The 26 subjects completed the weight-loss program with an average weight loss of 3.8 [+ or -] 2.8 kg (P<0.001). There were no significant differences between sex or diabetes status in relation to weight loss, RD visit attendance, or non-RD weigh-in visit attendance. Among the subjects with type 1 diabetes, Hbalc was not statistically significantly different pre- versus post-weight loss. Weight loss (%) was significantly correlated with attendance of RD-led weight loss classes (r=0.451, P=0.021) but not weigh-in visit attendance that did not include RD-led weight loss classes (r=0.329,P=0.101). Frequent dietary instruction by an RD conveying topics related to weight loss was more effective than frequent weigh-in visits alone in promoting weight reduction in this study.

LETTERS TO A BULLIED GIRL: MESSAGES OF HEALING AND HOPE Bullying is part of every childs life. Think about it: Every kid has either been bullied, bullied someone else, or witnessed acts of bullying. The book Letters to a Bullied Girl: Messages of Healing and Hope (Harper, 2008) attempts to teach readers the real consequences of bullying so that kids wont resort to teasing, taunting, and hounding their peers. The books approach works terrifically. The book consists of letters written about the subject of bullying. Some of the letter writers are former bullies, some are victims of bullying, and some are the parents of either bullies or victims of bullying. All the letters were addressed to one girl, Olivia Gardner, a teen who was bullied for many years. Two sisters, Emily and Sarah Buder, heard about Olivias plight and organized a letter-writing campaign on behalf of Olivia. More than 4,000 letters were written, leading to the creation of Letters to a Bullied Girl.

function centres sydney
June 30th, 2009
Innovations now permit operational headquarters to be designed around function and flexibility, not hardware. Advances in information technology have freed operations center designs from technology limitations. Now, a conceptual change and open systems allow planners to design operations and command centers around their intended functions rather than a specific set of compatible hardware and facilities. The concept can be scaled up from a briefcase-size operations system to a vast headquarters command center. Business conference facilities and civil disaster relief centers can benefit from the same process applied to military tactical and strategic bases. Traditionally, military command and operations center designs largely were driven by available technology. As an example, the U.S. Army years ago experimented with the concept of a distributed command post. Various nodes and assets would be distributed to avoid creating a single command and control target susceptible to an easy strike. However, technology limitations in areas such as bandwidth and peripherals thwarted this effort.

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 11, 1995–SQA, Inc., the leader in automated testing of Microsoft (r) Windows (r) client/server applications, today announced SQA Suite for Windows 95 and Windows NT, and demonstrated the new product at SQAs Fourth International Enterprise Partners Conference.SQA Suite for Windows 95 and Windows NT provides seamlessly-integrated testing for enterprise client/server applications developed for the Windows 95 ™ and Windows NT ™ 32-bit operating systems. SQA Suite for Windows 95 and Windows NT will set a new standard for the automated testing of all versions of Windows (Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, and Windows NT) and will ease the migration of Windows 3.1/3.11 client/server applications to Windows 95 and Windows NT.SQA Suite for Windows 95 and Windows NT is a 32-bit implementation, written with the Win32 Applications Programming Interface (API), that runs on the Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. The user interface has a Windows 95 “look and feel” and a Windows 95-style installation. It has the same functionality as the recently-completed 4.0 versions of the products SQA Suite, as well as some evolutionary extensions to SQAs unique Object Testing(tm) technology. In addition to providing the most advanced testing solution for 32-bit applications on Windows 95 and Windows NT, the 32-bit version of SQA Suite wil help Windows 3.1/3.11 users migrate to Windows 95 and Windows NT with confidence. Users of the 32-bit version of SQA Suite will be able to play back Windows 3.1/3.11 test scripts on Windows 95 or Windows NT, or record a script and 16-bit application on Windows 95 or Windows NT and play it back on a 32-bit version of the same application. This flexibility assists users with two common types of migration to Windows 95 and Windows NT:– 16-bit Windows 3.1/3.11 applications ported to Windows 95 and Windows NT. Many organizations will want to run their existing 16-bit Windows 3.1/3.11 applications on Windows 95 or Windows NT, but will be concerned about the possibility of mission-critical applications operating incorrectly. SQA users will be able to build test scripts for their 16-bit applications on Windows 3.1/3.11 and use them to ensure the applications operate properly on Windows 95 or Windows NT before deploying them in production. SQA customers can begin building test scripts today using the currently-available version of SQA Suite in anticipation of the 32-bit version.

For some people, summer is a time for travel, family reunions and outdoor activities. For others, its a time to make more money than at any other time of the year. Landscapers, house painters, pet sitters, movers and lawn mowing companies earn most of their cash between May and September. Now is harvest time. Barbra Smith, owner of Signature Gardens, a Topeka-based landscaping company, said she and her crew of three employees are busy designing, installing and maintaining landscaping for clients. Nathan Kaberline, 23, is making money painting houses. Kaberline has the College Pro Painters franchise in Topeka, which connects customers with young adult painters. He has several employees and pays a percentage of each house painting job back to College Pro Painters. “This is a great way to learn business. Its a real-life MBA,” said Kaberline, who plans to use profits to pay his Kansas State University tuition.
In 1931 Dorothy L. Sayers opened her novel Five Red Herrings, with an amused gazetteer of Kircudbrights many artists studios: There are large and stately studios, panelled and high, in strong stone houses filled with gleaming brass and polished oak. There are little homely studios gay with blue and red and yellow curtains and odd scraps of pottery, tucked down narrow closes and adorned with gardens where old fashioned flowers riot in the rich and friendly soil. There are painters in oils, painters in watercolours, painters in pastel, etchers, and illustrators, workers in metal; artists of every variety, having this one thing in common–that they take their work seriously and have no time for amateurs. This proliferation owed everything to the inspiration of the painter E.A. Hornet (1864-1933) (Fig. 1), whose own studio-house in the towns High Street, Broughton House, became the responsibility of the National Trust for Scotland in 1997 and reopened in 2005 (Fig. 2). The restoration of its interiors is proving one of the most challenging, as well as rewarding, projects undertaken by the NTS, because of the paucity of documentation about these rooms original appearance. (1) Broughton House was established as a Public Art Gallery and Library under the terms of a trust established by Hornel in 1920. He died in 1933, but the trust did not come into effect until 1950, following the death of his sister, Elizabeth, known as Tizzy, who had lived there with him and was left the use of the house during her lifetime. The house was opened to the public in 1951. Hornels intention was to ensure the preservation of Broughton House with its furnishings, Library, curios, works of art and other articles therein. for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Stewartry of Kircudbright and visitors thereto. He intended that the contents should be viewed as a nucleus and added to under the absolute guidance of the Scottish National Gallery. Unfortunately, Hornel left no documentary key to help us unlock the histories of his collections, whose provenances and significance died with him and Tizzy. The only inventory in survive–although earlier ones are known to have existed–was made by Thomas Love and Sons of Perth in October 1974 to guide sales at a time when the trustees were being forced to realise their assets in the face of financial difficulties. Hornels trustees were representative local worthies of Kircudbright but their duties cannot have been easy to discharge. His vision for the future of Broughton House included the creation of an outstanding library, built-up with great thoroughness on the basis of a comprehensive bibliography of all the books pertaining to the locality, as well as an art gallery and museum which incorporated important archaeological collections. Broughton House, which has–in the main–a diminutive 18th-century scale and a complexity” of levels that stretches further back into the towns past, was not an ideal choice of building for this new public role. Hornel had clearly forseen this because he included in his gift the large house next door, to allow for future breathing space that has become ever more necessary since the trustees were obliged to sell it during their financial difficulties. The trustees were perhaps more comfortable with carrying forward the library ambitions and in 1952 established a branch library in the dining room. (2) It is impossible to read through their minute books without sympathy for their plight in the face of the financial pressures in staffing and regularly opening a particularly quaint old house in an increasingly popular tourist resort. A body of Friends was formed in 1979 to give a focus for fundraising, but also to supply the volunteer staff that allowed for extended visitor hours in the summer. The trustees, in common with most Institutions at this time, had rearranged the rooms in accordance with post-war notions of taste, so that in the hall Hornels dense arrangements, which included taxidermy, gave way to a thin, watered-down selection from his eclectic possessions that conformed to the most conventional norms. The more important Wedgwood vases forced out the folk-art pottery in his china cabinets, and white paint dispelled his carefully cultivated penumbral aesthetic. The Friends, surely rightly, wanted a new emphasis on Broughton as an artists house, a rather novel concept in Scotland, to show how it had functioned as the home of one of the countrys leading artists. The branch library had already been given its marching orders and Hornels dining room re-established, although, sadly, by then nobody could remember how it was meant to look. The Friends continued this revisionism by adding Hornels studio to the tour, with a dummy dressed as Hornel as its centrepiece.

A recent investigation was designed to see whether a phenomenon similar to naturally occurring relapse might be produced experimentally in a shorter time period by intentionally interrupting weight loss momentum during the initial treatment period. Investigators felt that artificially forcing weight stabilization might allow them to produce experimental relapses in a shorter time frame than occurs naturally during treatment. The purpose of the study was to experimentally test this disruption hypothesis by randomly assigning some patients to interventions that would disrupt their weight loss momentum. Subjects included 142 men and women (22 males and 120 females), aged 25 to 60 years with a mean BM1 of 33.1 [+ or -] 3.3 kg/[m.sup.2]. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups that differed in the scheduling of the 14 group lessons. The control group completed 14 sessions, on 14 consecutive weeks. The long break group (LB) took a 6-week break after the seventh lesson. The short break group (SB) took 2 week breaks after the third, sixth, and ninth lessons. Participants in all groups were assessed at postreatment (week 20) and 6 months later (month 11). The three groups received the same behavioral weight loss intervention consisting of 14 group meetings. The subjects were also assigned a calorie goal of 1000 to 1500 calories per day depending on their baseline weight. Additionally, to create a formal rule for `break, participants were given a list of 13 high-fat foods that were to be totally restricted (for example, cheese, burgers, cakes, and pastries). Exercise was gradually increased up to 150 rain of activity per week. There were no group meetings during breaks and participants were instructed no to monitor their behaviors or weight during these breaks and to eat and exercise as they had before the program. Following the `breaks, treatment meetings began where they had left off. After completing the 14 lessons, all participants were encouraged to maintain their new eating and exercise habits and continue to lose weight or maintain their weight loss. The subjects appeared to take the breaks as prescribed, with interruptions in self-monitoring, dietary adherence, and self-weighing (but not exercise). However, participants quickly resumed their weight loss behaviors after the break. Breaks produced a slowing of weight reduction or slight regain, but weight losses during the breaks were not significantly different from the control group. Overall weight losses (0 to 5 months or 0 to 11 months) did not differ between the treatment groups.

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Nexus Energy Software, a leading provider of Web and call center customer service solutions to energy utilities, announced the release of the ENERGYprism(R) Home Energy Center and its installation to date on 33 utility Web sites, in many cases replacing earlier Nexus customer energy management Web tools. Energy Center was developed to improve the Web experience for customers of energy utilities, and increase reliance of customers on utility Web sites to answer their questions such as: How does my homes energy use compare with others? How much do my appliances cost to operate? What techniques and utility programs are available to help me save? “The Home Energy Center software is a breakthrough,” remarked Harvey Michaels, chairman and CEO of Nexus. “With it we move forward from the concept of a Web-based energy audit to a full-service Energy Center that addresses a wide range of customer needs, with Web personalization of navigation and content unique to each returning customer. This increases the value of the application with each visit, which in turn reduces the utilitys customer service costs while supporting the utilitys marketing and energy management objectives.” Energy Center software features include a personalized My Home return page, with content based on the customers prior visits and profile; a Welcome page with examples of content and questions that can be answered; and navigation alternatives: customers choose a self-guided explorative process, or a more structured, wizard-like experience. Also notable is the capability of the product architecture to support individual client configurations with a common product core, which allowed over 30 customer-specific upgrades to occur efficiently and almost simultaneously.

ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIOThe most common audio advertising media is FM radio. Placement of an advertisement on FM radio costs about as much as an advertisement placed in a metropolitan newspaper. However, radio is more dynamic than print alternatives because it allows the advertiser essentially to talk with the consumer. Indeed, many small business consultants believe that an entertaining and informative radio advertising campaign can be a major asset. Nonetheless, some analysts contend that small business owners should proceed cautiously before deciding to rely exclusively on radio advertising. Indeed, most businesses incorporate a media mix when attempting to sell their products or services, utilizing radio advertising in concert with print and other advertising media. The key for small business owners is to study what types of advertising best suits their products and services and to use that media to spearhead their advertising campaign.Radio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone. The costs associated with purchasing radio advertising time reflect this emphasis on reaching the commuter audience. The four time slots, or dayparts, offered for advertisers by most radio stations are the morning drive, daytime, afternoon drive, and evening. The two most expensivebut also most effective advertising slotsare the morning and afternoon drive times.
Business Editors/Advertising High-Tech Writers L90, Inc. (Nasdaq:LNTY), a leading provider of Internet advertising and direct marketing solutions for advertisers and Web publishers, announced today it is launching a new national print, radio, outdoor and online advertising campaign tagged “Stand Out!” L90s campaign is focused on communicating its brand as leading the way in the next generation of advertising, stressing the uniqueness of adMonitor, its proprietary advertising serving and tracking technology. The “Stand Out!” campaign speaks directly to advertisers and Web publishers who are looking to reach targeted audiences through strategic online advertising campaigns. The campaign began with national print ads containing an assembly of smiling yellow ducks with the exception of one bright blue duck, signifying L90s capability to make brands “Stand Out.” The phase due to launch in September features a fishbowl containing a pool of standard goldfish, with the exception of one blue fish jumping out of the bowl. The repetition of a blue figure “Standing Out!” will be a continuous theme throughout the creative campaign. In addition to the blue “Stand Out!” images, L90 is making a noticeable effort to brand its flexible and scalable adMonitor technology. L90 labels adMonitor as the “New Standard in Internet Advertising Technology,” focusing on the importance of its real-time reports that allow for immediate campaign adjustments for clients. The technology was specifically designed to handle serving and tracking for L90s cutting-edge advertising tools such as co-branded microsites and jump pages, content integration, rich media, sweepstakes, direct mail, and viral marketing. Due to the high demand of the adMonitor technology from Web sites that are not a part of L90s Web network, L90 has begun to license the technology.

Printing Seattle
June 27th, 2009
ROCHESTER, Mich. — A breakthrough survey conducted by Foresight Research quantifies the
automotive sales impact of print articles and print advertising. Then it
compares print articles and print advertising influence to other forms
of marketing communications used by auto buyers.
The study shows that the majority of vehicle buyers (62%) are influenced
to some degree by print articles, and 45% are influenced to some degree
by print advertising. 19% said print articles were a primary or secondary
purchase influence, and 8% reported that print advertising was a primary
or secondary influence.
“We also noted the influence by vehicle brand purchased and found that
BMW, Cadillac, Acura, Lexus, Infiniti, Hyundai and Mazda lead the brands
in terms of impact from print articles. Then we looked at the print
advertising side and many of the same brands appear. The reason is that
buyers are paying attention to both the articles and the ads,” says
Steve Bruyn, CEO of Foresight Research.
So, what are the most influential publications? Consumer Reports and
newspapers are widely influential but so are some of the automotive
publications like – Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Automobile Magazine,
Road and Track and Autoweek. “This study proves that print publications
still play a role in this electronic era,” stated Bruyn.
The Pictorial Print Division (PPD) serves those who make prints or have their work displayed as prints. Prints may be self-made, commercial, digital, or darkroom printed. If the final copy is a print, then consider what the Pictorial Print Division has to offer. A group of 8-12 photographers make up a Print Study Group. A portfolio of prints is mailed to each member in turn, and the member comments on each print, removes a previous print, inserts a new print, and adds a personal newsletter. The last member sends the portfolio to the “commentator,” an experienced photographer who provides an “expert” opinion on each print. The secretary sets a new schedule and starts the portfolio on the next round. The following are some of the portfolios available: American Portfolio–Approximately 30 portfolios to fit individual needs: color, monochrome, nature, contemporary, commercial, assigned subjects, digital printing, darkroom printing, 8×10, 11×14, etc. Portrait Portfolios–Five Study Groups, including Character Studies, Children, Animals, Figure Studies, and Glamour Girl. The emphasis is on posing, lighting, apparel, and backgrounds. Canadian and European Portfolios–Canadians and Europeans participate with fellow members from their own or neighboring countries. POM is a monthly print competition for all PSA members. Subject matter and printing techniques are “open.” Four classes, two for color and two for monochrome, allow experienced and less experienced photographers to compete on their own levels. Qualified PSA judges critique your prints and provide written comments and suggestions for improvements. Each month 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners receive certificates, and the winning prints are posted on the POM Gallery web pages. A “Picture of the Month” is selected for publication in the PSA Journal. Winners and Honorable Mentions receive “points,” and at the end of the year the member with the most points in each of four categories receives a PPD medal. You may join POM at any time. If you would like to be a POM judge, contact the POM director.

Ever wonder why were all so hung up on beauty–why its important to both men and women, no matter our race or place in the world, and why people across different cultures have similar ideals? “There are evolutionary roots to beauty,” explains psychologist Nancy Etcoff, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and author of Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty. “Essentially, beauty is a biological advertisement of health.” In other words, people are attracted to visible signs of good health like clear skin, shiny hair and rosy cheeks because these were the clues our ancestors used to determine whether someone would make a good mate. These days, the natural signs of beauty are easily enhanced. The perfect-hued lipstick and blush, for example, impart a healthy glow, and the right moisturizers can keep your complexion soft. Improving on natures gifts is anything but vanity; Etcoff explains that beautifying yourself is simply another form of self-care. “More and more, people are viewing their health and their looks as being united. Its not simply putting on makeup or getting your hair done–its taking care of yourself and your body.” All the more reason to care for your skins specific needs, When you find a makeup look thats just right for your age, attitude and complexion, the beauty/health connection is confirmed. Here, three experts–makeup artists Sue Devitt, Bobbi Brown and Carol Shaw–offer advice on creating a look thats right for you. Though its impossible to hold back the clock forever, the common beauty goal for women in their late 20s: and early 30s is stalling time for another few years–and with the right makeup, enhancing the glow that already exists, explains Sue Devitt. personal injury lawyers baltimore

Most debates about lawyers professional responsibilities ultimately devolve into discussions of the “role” of lawyers-including the functions lawyers serve in the legal system, how lawyers should achieve those functions, and how lawyers should reconcile conflicts between competing interests that are potentially affected by their conduct. The notion of a lawyers role can be helpful for identifying principles of behavior. Thus, for example, whether attorney-client confidentiality is appropriate and whether exceptions should be acknowledged depends on the conception of lawyers from which one starts. If lawyers are to be clients sole and fully-allied champions, then strict confidentiality rules make sense. If lawyers are to be objective intermediaries between clients and society and have independent obligations to the law, exceptions seem more acceptable. The task of code drafters is facilitated when they can proceed from the assumption that a single paradigm governs the lawyers role-either a paradigm encapsulating a theory of behavior (how lawyers ordinarily act) or a paradigm encapsulating a normative ideal (how lawyers should act). When code drafters rely upon multiple paradigms (for example, lawyers should act as clients alter egos and as officers of the court), inconsistent regulatory mandates can result, and lawyers may become confused about their functions. The ABAs 1908 Canons of Ethics, which prevailed in most American jurisdictions throughout the early twentieth century, suffered from an emphasis on inconsistent ideals.1 The bar was in a state of disagreement about lawyers roles and lawyers had no point of reference for determining how to act.2 Therefore, when the ABA adopted the first concrete professional code in 1969,3 it became important for the drafters to identify an over-arching theory. By emphasizing the lawyers place in the adversarial system, the 1969 code served a forceful unifying and educational function.4 Nevertheless, an ethics codes overemphasis on a single paradigm can lead to undesirable results. It tends to produce idealized rules that either rest on counter-factual assumptions or impose obligations on lawyers that are so inconsistent with their personal incentives that violations become routine. In modern times, an exclusive focus on the adversarial ethic seems less important than in 1969 because lawyers have developed a shared sense of core obligations to clients and of the part lawyers play in the legal system. The recent history of lawyer regulation reflects a desire on the part of the bar to fine-tune the basic message of the 1969 code-to recognize more nuances than, perhaps, a single image of lawyers can accommodate.5 The task of drafting professional rules is complicated by the fact that the public perception of the bar is not unitary. Society views lawyers in many different, and sometimes inconsistent, ways. These multiple conceptions influence code drafters. In practice, the modern legal ethics codes incorporate a number of “images” of lawyers as bases, or catalysts, for disciplinary rules. Relying on these images has consequences for how the codes treat lawyers and, as a theoretical matter, for how the rules should be drafted. Part I of this Article identifies some of the different images of lawyers that exist6 and the ramifications of emphasizing each image in the professional codes. Initially at least, this Article takes no position on the accuracy of the images in describing lawyer behavior-for example, whether lawyers act in a selfinterested manner or whether lawyers feel bound by unenforceable professional norms. As a practical matter, each of the images has solid footing in some respects. That is to say, each is based on a valid characterization of how lawyers act in some situations. Part I will suggest, however, that relying upon multiple paradigms inevitably fosters schizophrenia on the part of the code drafters.

Hispanic men have experienced the greatest losses. During the past 30 years, the median income of black men rose 22 percent, after adjusting for inflation-rising from just $14,794 to $18,096. While he median income of black men is still far below that of white men, the gap is closing. In 1967, black men made just 57 percent as much as white men. By 1997, they made 69 percent as much as whites. Non-Hispanic white men have the highest median income, $27,559 in 1997. Asian men are in second place with a median income of $25,046. * As younger, better-educated generations of men replace older, less-educated men in the black population, the incomes of black men will continue to approach those of whites. In contrast, Hispanic incomes are not likely to rise much until immigrants make up a much smaller share of the Hispanic population.
